A beam clash happens when two beams meet head-on. Both fighters are locked in place and a timing meter appears: every well-timed press pushes your beam forward, and the side that pushes far enough breaks through while the loser is left exhausted. Your stats matter, but timing can turn a fight around.

Starting a clash

A clash starts when two beams fired by different fighters meet head-on. Only the Wave and Beam types clash: the Kamehameha, Galick Gun, Final Flash, Special Beam Cannon, Heat Dome Attack, Mouth Blast and the like, Wave attacks you create yourself included. See Ki Attacks.

Smaller attacks (Small Balls, Lasers, Disks) that run into a firing beam don't clash: they are simply destroyed.

Allies never clash with each other: party members (while party PvP is off), players on the same team and players fighting the same world boss (see world boss truce) can fire their beams side by side, and a beam doesn't destroy an ally's smaller attacks.

While the clash lasts, both fighters are held in place and invulnerable, and the damage of both beams is frozen.

The timing meter

Each fighter gets their own meter. A marker sweeps across it, changing direction on every sweep, and each sweep has a window in a different place. A sweep takes about 2 to 3 seconds.

  • Right-click when the marker is inside the window.
  • A press near the centre of the window is PERFECT; anywhere else inside it is GOOD.
  • A press outside the window is a MISS and wastes that sweep. Only one press counts per sweep.

Presses are checked by the server, so the timing can't be faked.

Pushing your beam

Every PERFECT or GOOD press builds momentum that pushes your beam forward: a PERFECT press gives the full amount, a GOOD press between half and the full amount depending on how close to the centre you were. Momentum fades over time, so you have to keep hitting the window.

Your stats decide how hard each press pushes: the beam with more power behind it turns the same momentum into a bigger push. A weaker fighter can still win with better timing.

Winning and losing

The side that pushes the clash far enough wins: its beam breaks through and keeps going for a moment, and the losing fighter takes the beam's full Ki damage, even through invulnerability frames. The losing beam is destroyed and the loser is exhausted: stunned for 3.5 seconds (see Effects).

A clash can also end in other ways:

  • If either fighter stops firing, the clash dissolves with no winner.
  • If neither fighter presses for 7 seconds, the clash dissolves.
  • After 30 seconds, whoever is ahead wins. If the beams are exactly even, the clash dissolves.

Clashing with enemies

Enemies that fire beams can clash with you too. They press on their own, and the more powerful their beam is, the more accurate their timing gets.

Strike clashes

Main article: Strike Clash

Melee techniques can clash too: when two fighters rush at each other with strike attacks, their fists meet and the same timing meter decides who breaks through.
