DragonMineZ ships its own melee combat system, similar in spirit to Better Combat: every weapon has a hand-crafted moveset instead of a single generic swing. This page explains that system and compares the signature weapons that use it.

The combat system

Each weapon is bound to a moveset: a combo chain of attacks that you cycle through as you keep swinging, each with its own reach, sweep angle, timing (wind-up) and damage.

  • Combos: consecutive attacks step through the moveset (attack 1, 2, 3…) and loop. Different weapon classes swing, sweep and reach very differently.
  • Dual-wielding: hold a weapon in each hand and your combo alternates hands automatically.
  • Reach: each moveset has its own range (a staff out-reaches a sword), on top of your entity reach.
  • Stamina: swinging, blocking and dashing all cost Stamina (see Stats and Attributes).
  • Blocking and parrying: you can block (up to about 65% damage reduction) and parry within a tight window (about 150 ms). A broken block leaves you stunned.
  • Dashing: dash and double-dash, with cooldowns, for mobility in a fight.

DMZ ships 27 base movesets: sword, katana, claymore, staff, battlestaff, spear, dagger, rapier, scythe, hammer, glaive, halberd, lance, mace, trident, twin blade, fist, claw and more. Weapons from other mods get a sensible moveset guessed from their name.

Signature weapons

Each of these plays differently because it uses a different moveset and its own critical-hit stats.

Weapon Moveset Feel Critical chance Critical damage How to get it
Yajirobe's Katana Katana (reach 2.75, fast 4-hit combo) Quick, aggressive slashes 25% 10% Crafted
Brave Sword Sword (reach 2.5, balanced) All-rounder; required for the Shining Sword Attack 10% 15% Porunga wish
Z Sword Claymore (heavy, wide, slow swings) Big, hard-hitting blows. Unbreakable. 15% 25% Old Kai's Ultimate Challenge
Power Pole Its own staff combo (reach 3, the longest): two wide sweeps and a 360° spin Long-range sweeps that keep enemies at bay. Unbreakable. 15% 10% Shenron wish
Dimension Sword Sword Balanced sword strikes — — Movies Saga quest, Janemba world boss (50%)
Tamagami Sword Sword Balanced sword strikes — — Tamagami Number 1 (30%)
Tamagami Trident Spear Long thrusts — — Tamagami Number 2 (30%)
Tamagami Hammer Mace Slow, heavy blows — — Tamagami Number 3 (30%)

The same fight plays out very differently depending on the blade: the Katana chains quick combos, the Z Sword trades speed for heavy crits, and the Power Pole wins the spacing game with reach and its spinning finisher.

World boss drop chances are the server defaults (see World Bosses). The Tamagamis are the guardians of the Demon Realm.

Weapons on your back

While you carry the Z Sword, the Brave Sword or the Power Pole in your inventory, it is shown on your character's back.

Enchanting weapons

DMZ adds its own weapon enchantments, such as Defense Penetration, Healing Reduction, Critical Chance and Critical Damage. See Enchantments.
