In waves 3 and 4 the Elites fight alongside the soldiers, glow purple like them and can't transform. In wave 5 they are the raid's bosses: they glow red and stay dormant until the six soldiers of the wave are dead, but attacking one wakes it up early. All of them fight on the Smart AI tier and attack only the raid's participants.
