The earrings break when the timer runs out

The Potara Earrings (Pothala) are the earring fusion. They ignore the race and stat-gap rules of the Fusion Dance and give a stronger fusion, but the earrings only come from a wish to Porunga and they break when the fusion ends.

Getting the earrings

A Porunga wish grants a full pair: Potara Earrings (Yellow) gives a Pair of Pothalas, and Potara Earrings (Green) a Pair of Green Pothalas. You receive them as a single paired item. See Dragons and Wishes.
Right-click the pair to split it into a left earring and a right earring, both stamped with the same pair ID (shown in the tooltip).
Give one earring to each player. Each player equips their earring in the head/tech accessory slot added by Curios (see Items).

The tooltips tell you who will lead: the wearer of the right earring leads the fusion, and the wearer of the left earring is the spectator.

Fusing

Both players wear their matching earrings: a left and a right with the same pair ID. Yellow pairs give a yellow fusion aura, green pairs a green one.
Simply get near each other (within about 20 blocks). The earrings automatically pull the two players together into the Potara pose; no key press is needed. If you get more than 24 blocks apart, the pose is cancelled.
When the two meet, or after about 10 seconds of pose, they fuse. The player wearing the right earring is the leader and controls the fused body.

Result

Bonus stats scale from ×1.75 to ×2.5 (STR, SKP and PWR), noticeably stronger than the Fusion Dance.
Any two races can fuse, there is no stat-gap limit, and upgraded Androids can fuse too.
The fusion lasts the full server duration.

Durability and breaking

The earrings take durability damage with each fusion, and when the fusion timer runs out the earrings break. When the timer runs out, the leader also goes on Fusion cooldown, which only blocks the Fusion Dance.

Fused fighters

Among the NPC fighters, Vegetto is the Potara fusion of Goku and Vegeta. He can be drawn as a contender in the Otherworld Tournament.
