Techniques

From DragonMineZ Wiki

Techniques are the combat moves you learn from masters, earn from bosses or design yourself. There are three kinds: ki attacks, ranged energy attacks whose damage scales with your Ki Damage (PWR); strike attacks, close-range rush attacks whose damage scales with your Strike Damage (SKP); and evasion techniques, utility moves that blind, reposition, heal or push enemies away. Techniques are equipped in slots, gain their own experience and can be upgraded.

Requirements

You need Ki Control Ki and strike attacks rely on channeling ki, so the Ki Control skill is a prerequisite: without it you can't charge or use them. You also need at least 5% Power Release and an empty main hand.

The same three conditions apply to evasion techniques. The only exception to the empty-hand rule is the Shining Sword Attack, which can only be used while holding the Brave Sword.

Learning techniques

Configured in: Skills Configskills.json

Each predefined technique is learned from a specific master and costs a single payment of Training Points (TP) to unlock. Masters with an alignment requirement won't teach you until your alignment fits. Up to 256 techniques can be unlocked.

Some techniques belong to certain races. A master lists every technique they teach, and its details show a Race line, in red when your race can't use it. You can still learn such a technique, but you can only equip it in a slot or upgrade it if your race is allowed: in the Skills menu it shows Not usable by your race and has no Bind to Slot button. By default these are restricted:

  • Gum Punch, the Mystic Ball Attack, Sleep Recovery, the Candy Beam and Gum Bind: taught by Majin Buu, only for Majins.
  • The Darkness Eye Beam: taught by Piccolo, only for Namekians.
  • The Android Combo: taught by Cell, only for Androids (any character with the android upgrade).
  • Perfect Rush: taught by Cell, only for Bio-Androids.

Some techniques aren't taught by any master by default: a few drop from world bosses, the Great Ape techniques are granted while you are in that form, and the rest can be added to a master's list by the server owner. Admins can grant any technique directly with /dmztech add <technique> [targets] (see Commands).

You can also design your own ki attacks with the Technique Creator (see below).

Ki attacks Ki Damage (PWR) Hold the slot key to charge, release to fire (Small Ball and Laser fire instantly) Ki Attacks

Using techniques

  • Unlocked techniques are equipped into 8 technique slots from the Skills menu (Bind to Slot).
  • Default slot keys: Alt + 1–4 for slots 1–4 and Ctrl + 1–4 for slots 5–8. While you hold a bar's modifier, its four slots appear on the technique hotbar (see Controls and HUD).
  • Ki attacks: hold the slot key to charge and release it to fire. If you are locked on (which needs Ki Sense), homing attacks follow your target.
  • Strike attacks and evasion techniques activate as soon as you press the slot key. A strike attack with no enemy in reach rushes forward to find one (see Strike Attacks).
  • Every technique has its own cooldown. Riding an entity blocks the beam-type attacks that root you while charging, and you can't fire any technique while riding a vehicle.

Charging and overcharge

  • Small Ball and Laser attacks are instant. Every other ki attack type charges up to 100% over its cast time (see the table below).
  • Keep holding past 100% to overcharge up to 175% (+25% per extra cast time). Medium Ball and Giant Ball attacks fire on their own when they reach the cap; the others fire when you release the key. Releasing below 10% fizzles.
  • The charge percentage scales the attack's damage and cooldown. Overcharging costs more Ki: going from 100% to 175% doubles the cost.
  • Ki is spent gradually while charging and the rest when the attack fires; sustained beams also drain Ki while they are out.
  • During a Ki Surge you charge 20% faster (see Combat).
  • A ki attack's size grows with your Ki Power, with bigger caps while you are transformed, so the same technique looks and hits bigger as you get stronger.
  • Ki attack damage is your Ki Damage × the technique's damage multiplier × the type's damage multiplier (server setting, 1.0 by default) × the charge.

Great Ape loadout

While you are in the Oozaru or Golden Oozaru form, your first three technique slots are replaced with Mouth Blast, Oozaru Slam and Rage Scream. They are added temporarily if you don't own them, and your normal slots come back when you leave the form. See Saiyan for the Oozaru forms and Fake Moon for one way to trigger them.

Technique XP and upgrades

Techniques gain experience (XP) when they hit, and more when they kill; evasion techniques gain XP each time you use them. Spend it in the Skills menu to upgrade the technique:

  • Ki attacks: damage (+0.05 multiplier), size (+0.1), speed (+0.05), armor penetration (+1%) and cooldown (−2.5% per level, up to −50%). Only the stats allowed for its type can be upgraded (see the type table above).
  • Strike attacks: damage and cooldown (−2.5% per level, up to −50%).
  • Evasion techniques: duration (+2.5% per level, up to +50%) and cooldown.

Each upgrade costs more XP than the last. XP costs and gains are tuned per type by the server.

The techniques you learn from masters, bosses or forms always follow the mod's current values: every time your character loads, they are refreshed from the built-in definitions, so a rebalance (damage, cooldown and so on) also reaches techniques you learned before it. The upgrades you bought are applied again on top.

Creating your own ki attacks

The Technique Creator (the Create Skill button of the Skills menu) lets you design your own ki attack in two steps. Creating it costs TP based on how strong it is; after that it works like any other ki attack (slots, XP, upgrades).

Step 1: appearance

The camera moves around your character and a live preview plays the attack on a loop (charge, fire and impact) exactly as that type looks in combat, at the size it would have with your current stats.

  • Choose the type with the arrows (or A/D, ←/→).
  • Pick the three colours: Core, Border and Outline. Click a swatch, then set it with the hue, saturation and brightness sliders or type a hex code; the preview recolours instantly. The colours start from your aura colour.
  • Drag to rotate the camera and scroll to zoom.

The panel also shows the type's cast time and the current TP cost. Press Continue (or Enter) for the next step.

Step 2: stats

Name the technique (up to 24 characters), choose its utility where the type allows it, and set its damage, size, speed and armor penetration (only the stats the chosen type supports can be changed), plus an optional secondary effect. Hold an arrow to keep adjusting, and hold Shift for bigger steps.

The screen shows the resulting Ki cost, cooldown, cast time and TP cost next to your available TP, and hovering the damage line shows how much damage (or healing) the attack would deal with your current stats. Back returns to the appearance step without losing anything. Create Skill only works if you can afford the TP cost, and you can't reuse the name of a technique you already own.

Utility and secondary effects

  • Damage or Heal. Small Ball, Shield and Area attacks can be set to heal instead of damage. Healing output is 40% of the damage value.
  • Secondary effects. A damage attack can carry a debuff, and a heal attack a buff, on one stat: STR, SKP, DEF, PWR, health regeneration, Ki regeneration or stamina regeneration. Intensity is 5–50% and duration 1–8 seconds, and a secondary effect makes the attack cost more Ki. Buffs only land on allies and debuffs on enemies, and a target can only hold one buff at a time.

Sharing techniques

Techniques can be exported as a code (DMZK1:…) and imported by other players. Importing a technique costs its TP.

Created techniques pair well with the Spiritualist and Cleric classes, whose passives boost ki-technique cooldowns and durations. Majins also heal more with healing techniques.

Terrain destruction

Ki attacks tear up the ground they hit: blasts and explosions leave craters, and big beams and balls dig through terrain as they travel. The blocks are removed over a few ticks, with flying debris and dust, so even huge attacks don't freeze the server. Disk attacks (Kienzan and the like) slice a clean cut through the blocks they pass, and the Dimensional Slash strike carves a crescent into the terrain. Dragon Balls and highly blast-resistant blocks (obsidian, bedrock, unbreakable DMZ blocks…) are never destroyed.

Whether ki attacks may break blocks at all, and which structures are protected, is set by the ki-griefing gamerules. Crater sizes per attack type are a server setting.

Beam clashes

Main article: Beam Clash

When two beams (Wave or Beam type: Kamehameha, Galick Gun, Final Flash, Special Beam Cannon…) meet head-on, a beam clash starts. Both fighters are invulnerable while it lasts and a timing meter appears: right-click when the marker is inside the window to push your beam forward. The side that pushes far enough wins and breaks through, hitting the loser with the beam's full Ki damage; the loser is also stunned for 3.5 seconds. Smaller attacks (Small Balls, Lasers, Disks) that run into a firing beam are simply destroyed.

Strike clashes

Main article: Strike Clash

When two fighters rush at each other with strike attacks, a strike clash starts: both are held in place, trading blows, and the same timing meter decides who pushes through. The winner deals a heavy blow and gets the technique back at once; the loser is knocked back and stunned for 3.5 seconds.
