Alignment measures how good or evil your character is, on a scale from 0 to 100. Every new character starts at 100 (fully Good). Your alignment moves with what you do (who you kill, the raids you lose, the tournaments you win, the quests and choices you make) and in turn decides which masters train you, how some NPCs treat you, which cloud you can ride and a few racial and combat perks.

Alignment bands

Band Range In short
Good 61–100 Trains with Goku, Gohan, Master Roshi, Krillin, King Kai and Old Kai, and receives Kami's Blessing.
Neutral 41–60 Locked out of both the Good and the Evil masters.
Evil 0–40 Trains with Cell and Frieza, can receive the Majin Mark (below 39), and is attacked on sight by the ogres of Hell.

Your current alignment is shown in the Stats tab of the Character Menu (V, see Menus). The value always stays between 0 and 100.

What changes your alignment

Fighting and killing

Killing certain creatures and players changes the alignment of the player who lands the killing blow (melee or ki):

You kill Alignment
A player with alignment 50 or more −5
A player with alignment below 50 (or a player who hasn't created a character yet) +2
Villagers, Namekian Warriors, Namekian Traders, Demon Realm Villagers and the Time Patroller −5
The Red Ribbon Army (soldiers and robots), Frieza Soldiers and Bandits +2

Raids

Losing a raid costs every participant alignment:

Raid Alignment on defeat
Saiyan Assault −10
Frieza's Invasion −20
Gomah's Army −30

Tournaments

Winning a tournament raises your alignment:

Tournament Alignment for the winner
Fortuneteller Baba's Tournament +5
Cell Games +10
Otherworld Tournament +10

Quests and dialogue

Quests can reward (or take away) alignment, and that reward is scaled by your story difficulty like other quest rewards (Hard ×1.25, see Sagas). Choices in an NPC's dialogue can also raise or lower it. Server owners and add-on authors set these up in their own quests and dialogue trees (see Custom Quests and NPC Dialogue), and both can also require an alignment range before a quest or a choice becomes available.

The Demon Eye

While you wear the Demon Eye (a drop of the Gomah world boss), you lose 1 alignment every 10 seconds by default. See Items.

The Majin Mark

Babidi only brands you with the Majin Mark if your alignment is below 39. Once you carry the mark, your alignment is held at 0 for as long as you have it. See Effects.

Commands

Admins can change alignment directly with /dmzalignment set, add and remove (see Commands and Permissions).

What alignment affects

Masters

Some masters only train you if your alignment fits their morality:

  • Good masters (Goku, Gohan, King Kai, Old Kai, Master Roshi and Krillin) need an alignment of 61 or higher.
  • Evil masters (Cell and Frieza) need an alignment of 40 or lower.
  • Master Tien keeps his Skills and Train open at any alignment, but below 41 he greets you coldly and his side quests show as locked, and below 25 he turns hostile.
  • Every other master (Piccolo, Vegeta, Trunks, Yamcha, Fortuneteller Baba, Majin Buu and the rest) has no alignment requirement by default.

A master whose requirement you don't meet still talks to you, just more coldly, but their Skills, Train and new side quests stay locked ("Requires an alignment of 61 or higher" or "40 or lower") until your alignment fits. Saga quests are never locked this way, quests you already started can still be completed and turned in, and their other services and tournaments (such as Cell's Cell Games) stay open. Every master has several greeting lines, plus cold lines when they dislike your alignment.

Cell and Frieza cover a huge chunk of the technique roster on their own, but because they need Evil alignment, a Good character can't learn everything from a single master. Since every character starts at 100, the Good masters accept you right away; to train with Cell or Frieza you first have to drop to 40 or less.

Master services

Service NPC Alignment needed
Flying Nimbus Korin, at Kami's Lookout Above 50 for a Flying Nimbus; otherwise he gives you a Black Nimbus.
Kami's Blessing (×1.2 TP for 5 minutes) Dende, at Kami's Lookout Good (61 or more).
Unlock Potential (Potential Unlock level 10 to 11) Grand Elder Guru, on Namek 50 or more (below 50 he greets you coldly).
Receive the Mark (the Majin Mark) Babidi, in Babidi's Ship Below 39.
Unleash Power (the Ultimate Challenge) Old Kai 62 or more, plus Potential Unlock level 10. Clearing it unlocks the Ultimate form (see Transformations).

Riding a cloud

Only the pure of heart can ride the Flying Nimbus: it carries you only with an alignment of 67 or more. The Black Nimbus is its darker counterpart and only carries riders with an alignment of 66 or less.

NPC hostility

Besides the master rule above, each NPC has its own alignment range, and by default many of the story's NPCs turn hostile below 25 (Piccolo below 20). Every NPC still talks to you: if you are outside its range or it has turned hostile, it greets you with a "disliked" line. Its Quests option always opens, but side quests from an NPC that needs a different alignment show as locked (for example "Requires an alignment of 41 or higher."). Saga quests, quests with their own alignment condition and quests you already have in progress or ready to turn in are never locked this way. Server owners set these thresholds per NPC: see NPC Placement and Alignment.

The ogres of Hell

The Red and Blue Ogres that walk the floor of Hell, below the Otherworld, attack Evil-aligned players (0–40) on sight. Anyone else is left alone unless they hit an ogre first, which brings the nearby ogres in too. See Bestiary.

Glind: Light and Darkness

Configured in: General Server ConfigracialSkills

The Glind racial skill Light and Darkness deals 10% more damage to players of the opposite alignment (15% against Frost Demons, 5% against Majins): with 25 alignment or less you punish players at 60 or more, and with 75 or more you punish players at 40 or less. Against any non-player foe a Glind always deals 7.5% more damage.

Other effects

  • Old Kai's Soul Punisher ki attack hits players who aren't Evil (alignment 41 or more) for only a quarter of its damage. See Ki Attacks.
  • Akkuman, one of the fighters of Fortuneteller Baba's Tournament, hits Evil-aligned players twice as hard.
